IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE WITH A SMALL CRACK IN MY WINDSHIELD?

Even if you treat your automobile with the highest care and safety, a little crack in the glass may be a real annoyance. Taking the effort to get the windscreen securely repaired and paying money for something you didn't cause may put a damper on anyone's mood. As a result, many auto owners choose for the more lucrative option of continuing to drive as if nothing had happened. However, when it comes to a broken windshield, ignorance is not bliss and may be far more dangerous than you think.

Glass, as lovely as it is, is also brittle. What seems to be a little, innocuous fissure may have a greater depth than seen.

A hairline crack usually does not do much harm on its own, but if untreated, it can deepen and become a huge windscreen crack. This can weaken the windshield and potentially make it lethal in the event of a collision, because a cracked glass will not be able to bear the pressure.

So, what is the best course of action? First and foremost, the degree of the damage will determine your following action. Experts should examine the damaged windshield area. You can choose between a short-term and long-term solution based on this. Meanwhile, here are some important considerations to keep in mind when driving a car with a broken windshield.

How Safe Is It to Drive with a Cracked Windshield?

Windshields are specifically built to give the driver and other passengers optimal safety and visibility. A decent windshield is built of toughened and laminated glass, which is made up of two layers of glass and an extra layer of PVB for further support. As a result, breaking this glass is extremely difficult. In the event of an accident, it can also withstand head-on impacts and up to three rollovers.

It's critical to have a thorough understanding of your windshield glass's quality and requirements. You can put off repairs until a better time if the break is minor and the glass is strong.

It is advised, however, that you do not completely disregard the fixes. A broken windshield signifies a reduction in passenger safety, and a faulty windshield can be fatal.

Is the Windscreen Crack Dangerous?

What is the best way to evaluate the windscreen crack? Windscreen Cracks include bull's eye, crack chip, linear crack, and others. The causative factor also influences the crack's potential for injury.

The size and location of the fracture are usually the most important signs of the hazards of a cracked windshield.

A minor chip, of course, is easy to fix, however major splits or dents may necessitate a replacement. If the location is immediately over the driver or passenger seat, the risk of glass fragments injuring someone in an accident is higher.

When driving with a cracked windshield, it is important to consider these important elements. Although they may look uninspiring at first, a crack the size of a dime can increase in length and depth with time, posing a safety danger. This leads to the second question: what action should you take to minimise the situation in the short term?

Windshield Repair vs. Replacement

There is no going back once your windshield is cracked. It must be fixed or replaced. To acquire a professional assessment on the damage and its repair, go to a professional windshield installer. It is never advisable to drive with a cracked windshield, no matter how little the fracture is. It can put you and any passengers in the automobile in danger. External influences such as air pressure and temperature variations can also cause the fracture to grow or compress, further weakening the structural integrity.

Ignoring obvious damage can put your life, home, and finances at risk. You may choose whether to have a repair or a replacement based on the location, size, depth, and other criteria associated with the damage. Additionally, for a period of time, avoid driving on uneven terrains, not slamming doors, avoiding vehicle washes, and so on to safeguard the new windshield.
